Reasons to Go Fishing in Alaska

Posted on Jun 25, 2009 under Articles | No Comment

Going on an Alaska fishing trip requires a considerable amount of not only money, but also time spent planning, especially if this is your first time heading to our last frontier. If you’re in this position, you may be asking yourself, “Is all this time and money worth it for a simple fishing trip? Why shouldn’t I just go to Disney Land instead?” People who have already been to Alaska however, will never have these questions cross their minds. For many of them, the pristine wilderness and plentiful, gigantic fish make for the trip of a lifetime.

Part of what sets Alaska apart from anywhere else in the USA, or the world for that matter, is the sheer amount of pristine, unspoiled wilderness. Even if you base your fishing trip in Anchorage, Alaska’s largest city, you can still charter a plane to for a reasonable price to fish in wide open spaces in complete isolation. If the thought of fishing a crystal-clear, braided river filled with running salmon in the shadow of some of the biggest mountain in North America does not make you want to start packing your bags right away, nothing will.

This vast wilderness isn’t just good to look at either. It opens up your vacation to include many other activities besides just fishing. There are ample opportunities to hike, go four wheeling, or even work your fishing trip in with a cruise. So, even if you’re bringing the family or just want some variety in your trip, there are numerous other activities for you to take part it.

Now, lets get to the reason we’re really here, the fish. Alaska is home to many fish highly sought-after by anglers, including bottom-dwelling halibut, running Chinook salmon, and monster rainbow trout. There are also plenty of locations that cater to every fishing style, so whether you want to troll the deeps of the ocean on a charter, bait fish, or do some fly-fishing, Alaska has something for you. On top of this, if you’re going for monster fish, you won’t find your chances any better than in Alaska. The current world record halibut, Chinook salmon, arctic char, and rainbow trout have all been caught in Alaskan waters. The best part of this is you don’t have to be an experienced fisherman to catch these fish. In many circumstances if you book a charter, they’ll provide all the equipment and experience that you need to have the fishing trip of your dreams.

So what are you waiting for, Get out there and start planning your trip!

Deciding where to go is just the tip of the iceberg for planning your Alaska fishing trip. Make Sure to check out AlaskaFishingWorld.com for other information, from Lodges to Halibut fishing.

Silver Salmon Fishing in Alaska

Posted on Jun 20, 2009 under Articles | No Comment

Care to try silver salmon fishing in Alaska? Fishing enthusiasts from around the world gather every year in Alaska for hope of catching huge fish. Why Alaska? Actually, Alaska is one of the many silver fishing destinations in the world, where in huge silver fish are as healthy and flourishing as in Alaska itself. And because silver fishing is sometimes fast-paced with 2 to three catches every fishing trip, keeping all anglers on their toes, are one of the interesting facts of silver salmon fishing in Alaska.

Anglers always dream of coming to Alaska to experience catching big fish, with which they are so famous of. Besides silver salmon fishing in Alaska, anglers also come to learn fishing techniques, but it doesn’t end there because there’s more to learning than you think. Not only fishing is great, but getting there is already half the fun. You get to see some scenic views that can make your eyes pop from admiration. The whole package of Alaska, that include spectacular scenery, wildlife, culture, as well as activities are what captivate visitors and keep them coming back.

And speaking of visitors coming to Alaska, one of the most sought after guided or unguided float trips is silver salmon fishing. The silver salmon fishing in Alaska is unfortunately not a year round activity, but only available during early August until the end of the month or simply called as early fall of Alaska. A course of rather short duration of fishing thrill, the fishery provides approximately three weeks of exciting fishing before closing at the end of the month.

During the season of silver salmon fishing in Alaska, the sizes of the silvers are too big averaging from 7-10 pounds. In some years, if ocean feeding conditions are better, the average weight of silver salmon can reach up to more than ten pounds with regular catches of 15 to 17- pound fish. Trophy class or twenty-pound silvers are now possible at the present. And even if silvers are smaller that their king salmon cousins, they still managed to amuse anglers with their acrobatic tricks, usually doing cartwheels and jumping around over and over after being hooked.

It is impossible to go back home with slumped shoulders due to disappointment of not catching any silvers with silver salmon fishing in Alaska. So when a silver fresh from saltwater takes your bait with only less than a rod’s length, you better have strong hands and arms enough to hold your catch. Bottom line is, your whole experience with silver salmon fishing in Alaska is guaranteed to turn out a huge success! So, plan your Alaska fishing vacation ahead of time, to make sure you can come on the right time for fishing season.

Alaska Salmon Fishing

Posted on Jun 20, 2009 under Articles | No Comment

If I ask you to think of the term ’salmon fishing’, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Alaska, right? The term salmon fishing and the term Alaska go together like peas and carrots, as Forrest Gump would say. If a person dreams about salmon fishing, they dream about salmon fishing in Alaska in most cases. This is because of the incredible salmon runs that the state of Alaska is home to year in and year out.

There are four main species of salmon to fish for in Alaska. These would include: pink, silver, sockeye, and grand daddy of them all the king salmon. These are the types of salmon that anglers fish for in Alaska. They are all targeted for different reasons. Some fight harder, some taste better, and in the case of the king, some are bigger. King salmon in Alaska over the 50 pound mark are not at all uncommon.

With thousands of rivers within Alaska that play host to amazing runs of salmon, one of the most popular rivers for salmon fishing has to be the Kenai River. All 4 Species of Alaska Salmon spawn into the Kenai River. King, Silver, Red and Pinks (Pinks, only on even numbered years). At 97 lbs 4 oz the World Record King Salmon was caught on the Kenai River. Now that’s something to boast about. The Kenai River is home to the world record king salmon. As a matter of fact, the Kenai River holds nearly 2 dozen IFGA world records for various salmon species as well as other fish. When it comes to salmon fishing in Alaska, The Kenai is the king of the rivers.

Techniques and methods vary for catching Alaska salmon, depending on species. A great idea for anyone fishing in such remote destinations is to use the services of a guide. Your guide can give you all the information that you need as far as what size gear to bring, weather conditions, etc. For this type of fishing a guide is recommended, especially if you have no experience with Alaska Salmon Fishing. A search on the internet will yield you more guide choices than you can shake a stick at. A guide is also a good idea to learn local tips and techniques.

Alaska salmon fishing is an incredibly enjoyable experience. Not only do the fish great taste and a are real challenge to catch, but the beauty that the state of Alaska offers is unmatched anywhere in the world. Did you know that the state of Alaska has more than 100 state parks within its borders? There is more wide open space in the state of Alaska than there is anywhere else in the entire United States. The state of Alaska truly is a treasure right along with the salmon fishing, which is an American treasure all by itself. Alaska salmon fishing is something every angler should get the opportunity to partake in at least once in his or her life.

Alaska Salmon Fishing

Posted on Jun 15, 2009 under Articles | No Comment

Sockeye salmon, Steelhead salmon, River trout, Chum salmon, Coho salmon and of course the Chinook salmon; when salmons of this variety can be caught in the Alaskan waters its hard to keep the throngs of hopeful anglers away. Pretty justified too, there have been far too many monster catches of Chinooks or deservingly named King Salmons over the Alaskan waters, further enticing starter and pro anglers to ply its waters and search for their luck.

The King Salmon is no doubt the most coveted price in Alaska salmon fishing, though over the years its estuaries are also known to shelter several gargantuan halibuts. But more or less, Alaska is more dominant with its endless salmon runs, and softer nerved anglers who are still skeptical in challenging the king can opt with other types of salmons other than the fiery King.

But they have to avoid angling for the Coho salmon, or sometimes called the Silver Salmon, too. This salmon type is next in line with the Chinook in tempestuousness; they are known to perform heavy acrobatics and stunts when compromised, beating novice anglers with lesser determination.

All in all, Alaska salmon fishing is one dominant American fishing sport. True you can fish for salmon just about anywhere: Puget Sound, British Columbia, Arkansas, New York… but the diversity of the salmon fishes in Alaska coupled with the level of the play involved there (most pros fishing for salmon head to Alaska), Alaska salmon fishing provides for the better experience.

So, have I convinced you yet about the boons of Alaska salmon fishing? Here are some starter venues to compliment for your Alaska salmon adventure ideas.

Waterfall Resort

Waterfall Resort is good only for one thing. They hold the Annual $100,000 King of Kings Salmon Tournament. Being a full sized tournament involving several pro anglers, this makes it a mighty fine venture indeed. The only catch is, you have to be a resort guest to join the tournament. No big deal, the Waterfall resort also boasts the best location in this part of Alaska. You might be interested to join.

Alaska Rainbow Lodge

Are you planning a more laidback adventure where you can fish on anytime of the day with less the hassle? A more personalized adventure perhaps? Why not settle on one of the riverside cabins along the Kenai River. Now that is personalized fishing vacation, with the fishing grounds right at your doorstep.

Regarding Kenai River, this is where Les Anderson became immortalized with his 1985 catch of a gargantuan salmon. It was a 97.4 pound King Salmon. The only rival record was the 1949 King Salmon caught at Petersburg, Alaska. At 126 pounds it was by far the heaviest though many were skeptical judging the absence of visual proofs.

Alaska Fishing Trips

Posted on Jun 12, 2009 under Articles | No Comment

Alaska is the perfect place in the world to have the fishing experience of a lifetime. With an infinite number of fishing resources, Alaska is the location to go to fish for rainbow trout, king salmon or halibut.

Alaska fishing trips assure a splendid fishing experience against the spectacular wilderness of the land. When choosing where to go in Alaska, it is important to know the type of fish you are hoping to catch, because some species are region-specific. For example, if you are going on a fishing trip in Alaska and are looking to catch halibut, you should try and look for the fishing locales where halibut is known to reside. Ask the local population where this might be, and you will get some good tips.

The climatic conditions must also be conducive to the fish you are looking for. If you are fishing in the summertime, you may not be able to catch the same types of fish you caught last winter. Again, ask around.

Southeast Alaska is popular for salmon, steelhead and halibut fishing. A great abundance of fighting fish is found in the Kenai River. Anchorage, Seward, Soldotna, Homer, the Kodiak Island of south-central Alaska, Bristol Bay and the Kuskokwim River of southwest Alaska are prime fishing destinations. Lake Hood in Anchorage Alaska is famous for fly fishing.

No matter where or when you choose to fish in Alaska, be sure to pack all of the necessary supplies. In the cold winter months, you should dress extremely warmly. In other seasons, dress in layers so that the sudden shifts in temperature can be accomodated as you fish all day or over the course of a week or weekend.
